The Bengali film
weekly Bijoli, which started in 1920, was one the earliest film magazines
in India. In 1924, India's first periodical exclusively devoted to cinema,
Mouj Majah was launched in Gujarati at Bombay by J.K.Dwivedi. Other film
journals like Photoplay started in Kolkata in
1926 while Movie Mirror (Chennai) and Kinema
(Mumbai) started in 1927. In 1929, the influential
Gujarati film periodical Chitrapat edited by Naginlal Shah and the
Moving Picture Monthly were launched in Bombay. In the following year,
Sailajananda Mukherjee started the Bengali film weekly Bioscope. Two
other Bengali film weeklies Batayan (edited by Abinashchandra Ghoshal)
and Chitralekha (edited by Bibhutibhushan) were launched in 1931. In
1934, the Hindi film periodical Chitrapat, edited by Hrishamcharan Jain
was launched in Delhi. In the same year, another Bengali film weekly Ruprekha
was also started. The seminal film monthly, Filmindia, was started in
1935. Cinema Ulagam, the first Tamil film journal was launched in the
same year. It was edited and published by P.S.Chettiar. The Indian Screen
Gazette was started in 1938. In the following year the magazine Film
Industry, was started in Bombay. The Bengali film weekly Rupanjali,
edited by Sudhangshu Basu, was launched in 1947.
In 1951, the Indian Express Group set up its film-based weekly newspaper Screen.
The fortnightly journal Filmfare was launched in 1952 and the following
year it announced its annual awards. The main Hindi film trade paper Trade
Guide, edited by B.K.Adarsh, was started in 1954. Another Hindi journal Film
Sangeet was started in 1956. Chindananda Das Gupta, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen
and others started the Indian Film Quarterly in 1957. The Federation of
Film Societies of India launched their journal Indian Film Culture in
1962 at Calcutta. The film periodicals like Shama (Urdu), Sushma
(Hindi) and Rasarang (Marathi) were launched in 1959.
In 1960, the weekly tabloid Movieland was launched in Madras. The
Journal of the CTA of South India, a Madras-based monthly was started in
1963, as the first technical film journal in India. The Tamil film journal
Bommai, edited by B.Viswanatha Reddy, was started in 1966. Next year it
diversified into the Telugu monthly Vijaychitra. The Cine Central,
Calcutta started its Bengali film monthly Chitrabhikshan in 1967. The
English monthly Stardust was launched in 1970, which soon revolutionized
the concept of film magazines. The Bengali film fortnightly Anandalok
started in 1975. The owners of Mathrubhoomi started the Malayalam film
journal Chitrabhoomi in 1978. The nineties saw the launching of 'G',
a suave film monthly in English from Mumbai.
