NATIONAL FILM AWARDS |
|
The National Film Awards are
considered as the most prestigious awards for cinema in India. It began in 1954
and is currently managed by the Directorate of Film Festivals. The awards are
given in the categories of Feature Films
and Non-Feature Films made in Hindi
and other regional languages. The awards are selected by members of independent
juries for films produced in the previous year
as per the National Film Award Regulations.
The award ceremony is held in New Delhi during which the awards
are given away by the President of India. A National Film Festival is organised
after the ceremony, where the award-winning films are screened for the public.
The 'Swarna Kamal' or the
'Golden Lotus Award' is given for the following categories: Best Feature Film,
Best Direction, Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment, Best
Children's Film and the Indira Gandhi
Award for Best First Film of a Director,
while the 'Rajat Kamal' or the 'Silver Lotus Award' is inter alia given
for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best
Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Child Artist, Best
Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction,
Best Music Direction, Best Lyrics,
Best Make-up Artist, Best Costume Design, Best Male Playback Singer,
Best Female Playback Singer, Best Choreography, Best Audiography, Best Editing,
Best Special Effects, the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National
Integration and Best Films on family welfare, environment
conservation/preservation and other social issues.
The awards in the Non-Feature Film category include those for
Best Non-Feature Film, Best Biographical Film, Best Arts/Cultural Film, Best
Anthropological/Ethnographic Film, Best Scientific Film, etc. Awards are also
given for the Best Film Critic on cinema and the Best Book on cinema.
57th National Film
Awards:
The 57th National Film Awards
were presented by the President on October 23, 2010 to the best of Indian Cinema
released during the year 2009. A few new awards were introduced for Location
Sound Recordist and Sound Designer in the Audiography category and for
Background Score in addition to the existing award for Best Music Direction.
The existing awards for Best Screenplay and Dialogues were replaced by awards
for Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay and Dialogues.

PHALKE AWARD |
The Dadasaheb Phalke award was instituted in 1969 and is considered as the
Government of India’s highest national honour for cinema. Named after the
veteran film actor Dada Saheb Phalke, the award is presented every year to
senior film personalities for their overall contribution to cinema and the arts.
It carries a ''Swarna Kamal" and a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh.
Devika Rani became the first recipient of the first Dada Saheb Phalke Award in
1969. The subsequent recipients of the Award include B.N.Sircar (1970),
Prithviraj Kapoor (1971-posthumous), Punkaj Mullik (1972), Sulochana (Ruby
Meyers) -1973, B.Nagi Reddy (1974), Dhiren Ganguly (1975), Kanan Devi (1976),

Filmfare Awards, which were introduced in 1954, are one of the
oldest and most prominent film awards, next in importance only to the National
Film Awards. These awards were initially referred to as the Clare Awards after
the editor of The Times of India, Clare Mendionca. The awards are presented
annually by The Times Group to honour artistic and technical excellence of
professionals in the Hindi cinema.
Only five awards were presented in the categories of Best Film,
Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Music Director during the
first awards function held on 21 March 1954 at the Metro Theatre of Mumbai. The
Best Film award was given to the film ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, the Best
Director’s Award was given to Bimal Roy for his direction of ‘Do Bigha Zameen’,
the Best Actor Award was given to Dilip Kumar for his performance in ‘Daag’,
the Best Actress Award was given to Meena Kumari for her performance in ‘Baiju
Bawra’, while Naushad bagged the Best Music Director’s award for his music
in ‘Baiju Bawra’. The number of awards has increased to 37 in 2010. The
most awards won by a single film is ‘Black’ (11 awards) in 2005. The
most Best Actor awards was bagged by Dilip Kumar (8 awards), followed by
Shahrukh Khan (7 awards) and Amitabh Bachchan (5 awards). The most Best Actress
award was bagged by Nutan. The most Best Playback Singer – male award was
bagged by Kishore Kumar (8 awards), while the most Best Playback Singer – female
was bagged by Asha Bhosle and Alka Yagnik (7 awards each).

Lifetime Achievement Award: Manna Dey
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan received
a special award for his 40 years in the film industry, while Madhuri Dixit
received a special award for her 25 years in the film industry.
