OF MADHYA PRADESH GOVERNMENT

Several national and state
level awards have been instituted by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to
honour the distinct achievements in the field of creative arts and
literature.
The following are national and state-level awards
of the Madhya Pradesh government

National-level Awards
Kalidas Samman: This is a prestigious annual award given separately
for outstanding achievement in four categories i.e. Plastic Arts, Theatre,
Classical Music and Classical Dance. Named after the renowned ancient
classical Sanskrit writer, Kalidasa, the award was first given in 1980. The
award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a plaque of honour. The
2007-2008 recipients were Balwantrai Bhatt (Classical Music), C.V.
Chandrasekhar (Classical Dance), Babasaheb Purandare (Theatre), Satish
Gujral (Plastic Arts), while the 2008-2009 the award was given to the famous
classical singer Pandit Channulal Mishra of the Benaras Gharana.
Kabir Samman: It is a prestigious annual literary award instituted in
1986-87 by the Madhya Pradesh Government and is conferred on litterateurs of
very high order. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh and a
citation. The latest recipients of the award include Ashok Vajpayee
(2005-06), Akkittam Achuttan Namboodari (2006-07) and Padma Sachdev
(2007-08).
Tansen Samman: This prestigious award was instituted in 1980-81 and
is given in the field of classical music. The award for 2009-10 was
conferred on Pandit Ajay Pohankar, while the award for 2008-09 was given to
the famous classical singer Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan. The award, which
carries Rs 2 lakh in cash and a citation, is normally conferred during the
‘Tansen Festival’ held in Gwalior. The other recent recipients of this award
include Ustad Abdul Halim Jafer Khan (2000), Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (2001),
Niyaz Ahmad Khan (2002), Pandit Dinkar Kaykini(2003), Pandit Shivkumar
Sharma (2004), Malini Rajurkar (2005), Sulochna Brahaspati (2006) and Pandit
Goswami Gokulotsav Ji Maharaj (2007).
Mahatma Gandhi Award:
This award is given for social work done as per the Gandhian Philosophy. The
award carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a citation. The award for the
year 2007-08 was given to the ‘Seva Bharti’ of New Delhi.
Kishore Kumar Samman: The Kishore Kumar Samman was instituted in
1997-98 and is given in the fields of film direction, acting, script writing
and lyric writing. The award carries Rs 2 lakh in cash and a citation. The
award for 2009-10 was conferred on Bollywood director Yash Chopra. The award
had earlier been bestowed on eminent film personalities such as Amitabh
Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Gulzar, Shyam Bengal and
Shatrughan Sinha among others.
Lata Mangeshkar Award: The Award was established in 1984-85 for
excellence in singing and music direction and carries a cash prize of Rs 2
lakh and a citation. The award for 2009-10 was given to playback singer
Anuradha Podwal, while the award for 2008-09 was presented to music director
Ravi. The previous recipients of this award include A.R.Rehman (2004-05),
Kavita Krishnamurti (2005-06) and Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar (2006-07)
among others.
Iqbal Samman: Instituted in 1986-87, it is a prestigious annual award
given in the field of creative Urdu writing and carries a cash prize of Rs 2
lakh and a plaque of honour. Some of the recent recipients of this award
include Shaharyar (2004-05), Quazi Abdul Sattar (2005-06), Sheen Kaf Nizam
(2006-07) and Iqbal Majid (2007-08).
Maithilisharan Gupta Award: This award, which was instituted in
1996-97, is given for outstanding contribution in the field of Hindi
literature. The award carries a cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a citation. The
recent recipients of this award include Shatrughan Prasad (2007-08) and Manu
Sharma (2006-07).
Tulsi Samman: Instituted in 1983-84, this is a prestigious annual
award given for outstanding achievement in the tribal, traditional and folk
arts in one of the four categories of art, theatre, dance and music. It
carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakhs and a citation. The 2006-07 Award was
conferred on Lallu Vajpayee.
Kumar Gandharwa Award: This award was instituted in 1992-93 for young
artists in the field of classical music, both vocal and instrumental. It
carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. The 2007-08 was given to Kala Ramnath.
Sharad Joshi Award: This award, which was instituted in 1992-93 and
carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, is given in the field of report writing
and Hindi satire. The 2006-07 Award was given to Bishon Tondon.
Devi Ahilyabai Award: This award was instituted in 1996-97 and is
given in the field of traditional folk and tribal art for female artists. It
carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation. The 2006-07 Award was
given to Gauri Devi.
State-level Awards

OF KARNATAKA GOVERNMENT

The following are
the awards of the Karnataka government
[i]:
Basava Puraskar: It is a national award instituted
by the Government of Karnataka and carries a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh. The
award is given to individuals for their contribution in bringing about
social reforms and social change and for bringing about religious harmony.
The previous recipients of this award include former President A.P.J. Abdul
Kalam (2006) and pontiff of the Siddaganga Matha, Sri Shivakumar Swamiji
(2007).
K.K. Murthy Memorial Chowdiah Award: The award, instituted by the
Academy of Music in Bengaluru, carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakh, a
citation, a memento and a shawl. The awards for 2010 awards were presented
to the internationally acclaimed musician Pandit Jasraj and Carnatic
vocalist Nagamani Srinath. The 2009 Awards were given to the renowned
Carnatic vocalist M. Balamuralikrishna and acclaimed instrumentalist
(saxophone) Kadri Gopalanath.
Gubbi Veeranna Award: Named after Gubbi Veeranna, one of the pioneers
of the Kannada theatre, this award is given for excellence in theatre in his
memory. P.B. Duttargi and B. V. Karanth are some of the earlier recipients
of this award.
Kanaka-Purandara Award: The Award, which is given for talented
musicians, carries a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh. The award was renamed in 2008
as ‘Nijaguna-Purandara’ award. The 2008 Award was conferred on Chokkamma of
Mysore. Panchakshariswami Mattigatti and Seshagiri Hangal are some of the
previous recipients of this award.
Shantala Natya Award: The Award, given in the field of dance, carries
a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh. The 2008 Award was conferred on K.M. Raman of
Tumkur. Maya Rao and Shanta Rao were some of the previous recipients of this
award.
Shishunala Sharief Award: This award is given in the field of light
music. The Award for 2006 was given to singer C.K. Tara of Mysore.
Varnashilpi Venkatappa Award: This award is given in the field of
painting. The award for 2007 was given to Shankargowda Bettadur, Raichur.
Jakkanachari Award: This Award is given in the field of sculpture and
carries a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh. The Award for 2008 was given to
well-known sculptor R Veerabhadrachar of Bengaluru.

OF ODISHA GOVERNMENT
|
The Orissa government has instituted several awards in the field
of culture. Some of the important awards include Atibadi Jagannath Das Award,
Samrat Upendra Bhanja Award, Jayadev
Award and Mohan Sundar Dev Goswami Award (film awards), Konark Samman,
Saraswati Puraskar and Fakir Mohan Sahityashree Puraskar.
Konark Samman : The
Konark Samman was instituted by the leading cultural institution Prafulla
Pathagar (library) of Jagatsinghpur in 1990. The award is given every year in
three fields i.e. popularising Oriya literature, rural leadership and leadership
in the field of rural education. Prof Paul St. Pierre, Biswanath Pattnaik and
Renu Dandekar were the first recipients of this award in each of these
categories. The award comprises of a cash component of Rs 50,000 and a plaque
with a symbol of the sun and the seven horses of the sun chariot.
The Konark Samman for 2010 was given to Professor Hermann
Kulke of Germany for his priceless contribution and pioneering research on
Orissa's culture and history.

OF KERALA GOVERNMENT

S.L.Puram Sadanandan
memorial award:
Noted theatre
personality Kavalam Narayana Panicker was chosen for the 2010 S.L.Puram
Sadanandan memorial award by the Culture department of Kerala government.
The award comprises a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, citation and a plaque.

OF MAHARASHTRA GOVERNMENT
|
Noted actor Shabana Azmi and directors Jabbar Patel and
Govind Nihalani have bagged the Maharashtra government's awards in the field
of cinema and theatre for 2010. The lifetime achievement award would be
given to noted director Jabbar Patel and special V Shantaram award to Smita
Talvalkar. The theatre award named after Prabhakar Panshikar went to Sulbha
Deshpande and Annasaheb Kirloskar award to noted singer actor Faiyaz. The
award in memory of Raj Kapoor will be given to Govind Nihalani for lifetime
achievement and a special award or 'Vishesh Gaurav Pooraskar to Shabana Azmi.
